Hobart Salamanca Market
Salamanca Place, Hobart, Tasmania, 7001
As Hobart’s favorite regular market, Salamanca Market brings a sea of people and several hundred stalls to the streets of Battery Point on Saturdays. Among the long rows of kiosks and stalls, market-goers will find local produce, handicrafts, coffee, and food for sale—plus the cheerful, social atmosphere of mingling people.
The basics
With so many stalls to browse, you can easily spend several hours exploring Salamanca Market. Most walking tours, shore excursions, and multi-day tours of Tasmania make time for a market visit if the timing of the tour lines up with market day. They generally give you free time to explore on your own during or after the tour. From the Salamanca Market, consider walking around to Hampden Road to see its historic buildings or Constitution Dock to admire its city views.
Things to know before you go
There are parking lots and street parking (both paid) within walking distance of the market.
Smoking is not permitted at the market as it is held in a smoke-free area.
While pets aren't allowed at the market, there is a “puppy parking” service where you can leave your dogs under a carer’s supervision.
Facilities at the market include an onsite ambulance crew, several public restrooms, and wheelchair hire.
How to get there
You can walk to Salamanca Market relatively easily from the Hobart Central Business District (CBD), the city’s waterfront, and the neighborhood of Battery Point. If you're coming from the south and west of Hobart, take the bus to Franklin Square. When coming from the north, alight at the bus stops around St. David’s Park. The market is a short downhill walk from both bus stops.
When to get there
The Salamanca Market takes place every Saturday from the morning until mid-afternoon. It’s best to visit in the first hour if you want to shop and get food before it gets busy around lunchtime. As an outdoor market, you likely won’t want to spend very long there in winter, while summer is when the market can get very crowded.
Where to eat and drink at Salamanca Place
For most of the week, Salamanca Place is not lined with stalls and kiosks, but it’s still a lively place to visit for food and drinks. A diverse offering of restaurants line the street, while others are hidden away on Salamanca Square. Nightlife venues in the area also cater to all tastes, from laidback pubs and brewpubs to wine and cocktail bars.
