Honolulu Museum of Art

900 S. Beretania St., Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii

Located near downtown Honolulu, the Honolulu Museum of Art is Hawaii's largest fine arts museum. Spanning several buildings, it houses one of the largest single collections of Asian and Pan-Pacific art in the US and also hosts an art school, art house theater, and events, such as film screenings, performances, and talks.

The museum’s permanent collection contains more than 50,000 pieces that span 5,000 years and includes American, Asian, and European paintings, decorative arts, textiles, and works on paper, along with traditional artworks from the Americas, Africa, and Oceania. Visitors can explore the museum independently as walk-in visitors or by reserving tickets in advance. The museum offers docent-led tours on various topics, which provide greater insights into its collection. The museum’s location makes it easy to combine with other downtown Honolulu attractions.

  • The museum is ideal for art lovers, including families with kids.

  • Free docent-led tours are available with museum admission.

  • The museum is accessible, and wheelchairs are available to visitors.

  • Free admission is offered for kids 18 and younger, active military members and their families, and college students in Hawaii.

The Honolulu Museum of Art is located at 900 S. Beretania St. in Honolulu, just off Interstate H-1. Paid parking is available behind the Honolulu Museum of Art School (with entrances on Beretania Street and Young Street). Several buses also stop near the museum, including routes 1, 1L, 2, and 11, and the Waikiki Trolley Red Line.

The museum’s opening hours are Wednesdays through Sundays from 10am to 6pm. The museum is closed for New Year’s Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. The museum offers many events and experiences, including HoMa Nights on Friday and Saturday evenings, with live music, drinks, bites, and hands-on art experiences.

Also part of the museum is the Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design. Housed in the former home of heiress and philanthropist Doris Duke, the museum houses a collection of Islamic treasures, including Iranian tiles, Indian jewelry, and a wood-paneled room from Damascus, and offers fantastic views of Lēʻahi Head.
