Hull Bay
Hull Bay Road, St Thomas, St. Thomas, 00802
Hull Bay on St. Thomas is all about snorkeling the neighboring reef, swinging in a beach hammock, and unwinding at a cool little beach bar. There’s fishing off nearby Inner and Outer Brass Cays, and the Atlantic whips up waves for some of the island’s best surfing. Hull Bay doesn’t attract the crowds of nearby Magens Bay, so the vibe is more laid-back and off-the-beaten-path.
The basics
Ideal for beachcombers trying to escape the crowds of St. Thomas, Hull Bay offers a quiet respite. Trees provide some welcome shade, and there’s even a nearby bar for when you get hungry. Keep in mind, you won’t find the amenities like those at Magens Bay, but an extra perk for dog owners is that you can bring your furry friend along with you to Hull Bay. A full-day boat charter is a good option if you’re looking to explore the waters surrounding the US Virgin Islands, and private snorkeling excursions to Hull Bay are also available.
Things to know before you go
Hull Bay is for experienced surfers only.
You can rent paddleboards and snorkeling gear from a local shop here.
Keep in mind that the shore is rocky; water shoes are recommended.
The rocky seafloor means it’s not ideal for families with small kids.
How to get there
Hull Bay is the next inlet west of Magens Bay, on the island’s central north coast. Head to the bottom of Hull Bay Road, also known as Route 37; you’ll find ample free parking there. If you take a taxi to Hull Bay, arrange for a return ride ahead of time.
When to get there
During the week, Hull Bay is quiet, but it gets busier on the weekends, when it’s a popular spot for locals. From November to March, you can expect the waves to pick up here. This is also when local surfers frequent Hull Bay, making it a good time to sit and watch them from the beach. Sunset is also a favorite time to visit.
Magens Bay
Hull Bay is west of Magens Bay, St. Thomas’ most popular beach destination. Unlike Hull Bay, it offers plenty of facilities, with lifeguards keeping watch, showers, a snack stall, and rentals; it also attracts a lot of tourists and cruise ship passengers. Head to the Mountain Top lookout to take in views of the bay and grab a banana daiquiri.
