POINT OF INTEREST

Humedal del Rio Lluta

Arica, North Chile

Surrounded by the Atacama Desert, one of the most arid regions in the world, Humedal del Rio Lluta is a vitally important wetland. The Municipal Natural Reserve and federally-designated Natural Sanctuary is an important resource for about 130 bird species and a top destination for nature lovers.

The basics

Located at the mouth of the Lluta River, the 76-acre (31-hectare) Humedal del Rio Lluta is host to more than 20,000 migratory shorebirds every year, which represents more than 40 percent of the migratory birds that pass through Chile. Species include endemic South American birds such as the Peruvian thick-knee and white-backed stilt, as well as birds that come from as far away as Canada. The nature sanctuary is a common stop on sightseeing tours of Arica.

When to get there

To see Humedal del Rio Lluta at its best, visit during the winter months from June to September. This period coincides with the migratory season for many bird species, offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching. To see specific migratory birds, visit in the early part of the season, around May or June.

La Tropilla Geoglyphs

About a 20-minute drive from Humedal del Rio Lluta, in the Azapa Valley, La Tropilla Geoglyphs depict llamas on the slope of Cerro Sombrero. There are a number of geoglyphs scattered around the valley, so taking a guided tour is the best way to ensure that you see them all.
