Huon Valley
Hobart, Tasmania
Extending from 30 minutes outside Hobart to southernmost Australia, the scenic Huon Valley is known as Tasmania’s apple orchard. The Huon Highway follows the Huon River through the area, passing vineyards, cider makers, and a series of small villages along the way. Huonville makes a popular base for exploring Tasmania’s far south.
The basics
There’s a little something for everyone in the Huon Valley, from orchards to antique shops to the Huon River itself, which ranks among Australia’s best rowing courses. It’s possible to explore the valley on a day trip from Hobart; depending on the itinerary, you might stop at a historic apple orchard or vineyard for a cider or wine tasting, visit the heritage towns of Huonville, Franklin, and Geeveston, or walk through the treetops on the banks of the Huon River on the Tahune AirWalk steel canopy walkway.
Things to know before you go
*The Huon Valley makes an excellent day trip for foodies and adventure travelers.
*You'll find lots of photo ops—this is one of Tasmania’s most photogenic regions.
*Huonville is the last major town before entering Tasmania’s far south, so be sure to stock up on necessities.
How to get there
The Huon Valley is 24 miles (38 kilometers) south of Hobart. The most convenient way to go is by tour or car, following the A6 Highway from Hobart. Public transportation in the area is minimal.
When to get there
The best time to visit the Huon Valley is during summer (December to February) when the weather is warm enough to enjoy the area’s outdoor attractions. It's also lovely March through May, when apples and grapes are in season.
Huon’s apple-growing history
Now part of the valley's character, the region’s first apple trees were planted by William Bligh, sailing master to Captain Cook aboard the HMS Resolution, in 1777. The town of Cygnet quickly became the hub of Tasmania’s apple industry as apples were exported to England as early as 1828.
