Hussain Sagar Lake
Hyderabad, India
Built in 1562, when Hyderabad was under the reign of Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah, Hussain Sagar Lake is among the largest artificial lakes in Asia. It was originally designed as a means to store water for irrigation and urban use; today it's a popular spot for boating and lakeside picnicking.
The basics
While many people come to the lake just to take in the scenery, all sorts of water-based activities are available, from boat rides to water skiing. There’s also a massive—and frequently photographed—monolith of the Buddha in the middle of the lake, one of the world’s tallest such depictions. A number of tours of Hyderabad go past the lake, or stop at its shores. Walking tours around the lake are also available.
Things to know before you go
Hussain Sagar Lake is a draw for families, fans of boating and water sports, and visitors interested in the Buddha statue.
The lake’s water quality isn’t suitable for swimming or wading.
Don’t forget to wear bug spray, particularly if you’re visiting around dawn or dusk, when mosquitoes are at their most active.
How to get there
Hussain Sagar Lake is in the heart of Hyderabad, and is easy to reach by taxi or public transportation, or by joining a tour that includes the lake. Popular access points include Lumbini Park on the southern end of the lake, Indira Park on the east bank, and Sanjeevaiah Children's Park on the northern shore.
When to get there
The best time to visit the lake is during the dry, cooler months of October–March, particularly if you plan to do any boating on the lake. Expect fewer crowds if you visit during the June–September rainy season, but note that boats might not be available if the rains are too rough. To avoid the heat of the day, come first thing in the morning or around sunset, or visit for an evening dinner cruise.
Jalavihar Water Park
On the northwestern side of the lake, Jalavihar Water Park is a great place to cool off on a hot summer's day, particularly if you're traveling with kids. Highlights include water slides, splash pads, and pools, plus a few dry attractions, including bumper cars and a kiddie train. There are also loads of places to eat at the park, from kiosks to cafés.
