Ilha do Mel (Honey Island)
Honey Island, Paranaguá, Paraná, 83251-000
A paradise-like island off the coast of southern Brazil’s Paraná state, Ilha do Mel (Honey Island) has been a protected nature reserve since 1982. Closed to vehicles and accessible to limited numbers of visitors each day, it preserves a wild stretch of the coastal Atlantic Forest. The reserve’s highlights range from beaches and historic lighthouses to rocky caves.
The basics
Ilha do Mel (Honey Island) is a tourism triple threat: a Patrimônio Histórico–listed site, state park, and part of a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. Measuring just 6 miles (10 kilometers) across, the hourglass-shaped island is both a rugged destination for nature lovers and a popular weekend getaway for residents of nearby cities like Curitiba and Paranaguá.
Some come to visit historic landmarks, including the Lighthouse of the Shells, centuries-old cannons and middens, and the 18th-century Our Lady of Pleasures Fort. Nature lovers hit the trails for its wealth of wildlife, including hundreds of rare bird species. And, those after a relaxing getaway head to its postcard-perfect sandy beaches, including popular stretches like the Enchanted Beach (Praia das Encantadas) and the surfer-friendly Large Beach (Praia Grande).
Things to know before you go
A maximum of 5,000 visitors are permitted on the island every day, and pets are not allowed.
Guesthouses and restaurants cater to overnight visitors on the island.
Bring sun protection and bug spray with you, especially if you plan to visit during the summer high season.
Because the island lacks vehicles and roads, it may be difficult for less mobile visitors to explore.
How to get there
Ilha do Mel is located in the Bay of Paranaguá, just 15 miles (24 kilometers) offshore from Paranaguá. The only way to reach the island is by boat: Vessels depart from Paranaguá and the smaller settlement of Pontal do Sul. Note that there are no vehicles or roads on the island; instead, it is crisscrossed by a network of hiking and walking trails.
When to get there
Ilha do Mel (Honey Island) is a popular destination throughout the year. Though the high season is during Brazil’s summer (December through March), that time of year also brings lots of rain; visit from March through June for a drier experience. Alternatively, time your trip for August, when the island hosts a jazz festival.
Enchanted Grotto (Gruta das Encantadas)
On your trip to Ilha do Mel, don’t miss the chance to explore the Enchanted Grotto (Gruta das Encantadas). This dark, rocky cavern on the island’s southern coast has long been associated with a local mermaid legend. Just note that the cave only can be visited during low tide when it’s accessed via a wooden bridge; take caution when exploring.
