Iona Abbey

Isle of Iona, United Kingdom, PA76 6SQ

With a history dating back to the sixth century, Iona Abbey is one of Western Europe’s oldest and most significant religious centers. Located on the tranquil Isle of Iona (itself just off the coast of the Isle of Mull), the abbey is offset by the wild Inner Hebridean scenery. Today, it remains a popular pilgrimage point for Christian worshipers.

The basics

Considered one of Scotland’s most sacred sites, Iona Abbey has been an enduring Christian symbol for thousands of years. Established by St. Columba in 563 and rebuilt following various Viking raids, it underwent a comprehensive restoration in the 19th century. Today, some of its best-known features are the chapel of St. Columba (thought to be the oldest Christian structure in Scotland), an important collection of early sacred sculptures, and its graveyard, where notable figures from history are laid to rest. It is also renowned for its literary history, and it is thought that the Book of Kells was produced here.

Today, the site remains popular among worshipers and history lovers, who can discover the artifacts in the abbey’s on-site museum. Iona Abbey also features on multi-day tour itineraries of Mull, Iona, and the West Highlands.

Things to know before you go

  • The weather in the Hebrides is changeable and can be inclement. Prepare with warming and waterproof layers, as well as boots with a good grip.

  • The Iona Community resides at the abbey today, and it is possible for visitors to book a stay and engage with community tasks while visiting Iona.

  • For some of the best views of the Isle of Iona, climb up its highest point, Dùn Ì, for vistas overlooking Mull and beyond.

How to get there

The Isle of Iona can be accessed by a Caledonian MacBrayne public ferry from Fionnphort on the Isle of Mull. The service runs throughout the day (with more frequent trips during the summer), and the trip is just 5–10 minutes; from landing, it is a 10-minute walk to the abbey (outside vehicles are not permitted on the island). Note that services can be canceled at the last minute due to adverse weather conditions.

When to get there

Iona Abbey can be visited throughout the year; it is open daily, from morning until late afternoon, with limited hours on Sundays. The best time to visit is during the summer, when the weather is likely to be better and ferry services run with more regularity. The Iona Community also offers programming throughout the year, including weekly stays and workshops.

Isle of Iona highlights

Iona Abbey is a highlight of the Isle of Iona, but it’s not the only thing to see once you’ve landed on this tiny island. Round out your excursion by visiting the Iona Heritage Centre, strolling on the beach along St. Columba’s Bay, and visiting the historic Marble Quarry.
