Jacuma Beach (Praia de Jacuma)

Conde, Paraíba, 58322-000

Brazil’s tranquil Jacumã Beach (Praia de Jacumã) is surrounded by reefs that break up the waves, creating a peaceful environment and a cove that's ideal for swimming. The white sand beach is lined with tall, shady palm trees. Located in the small fishing village of Jacumã, it is a relatively secluded beach with few tourists or beachgoers.

The basics

Known for its calm waters, tropical scenery, and fresh seafood, Jacumã Beach is a refuge from the winds and crowds of other Brazilian beaches. For those craving adventure over relaxation, nearby Jacumã Lagoon is a popular stop on dune buggy tours. At Jacumã Beach both aerobunda (ziplining across the dunes, over the water, and finally into the lagoon) and skibunda (boarding down the sand dunes into the lagoon) are adventurous options for daring travelers.

Things to know before you go

  • The beach boasts crystal turquoise water and soft sand, so no need for water shoes.

  • There’s a restaurant, changing rooms, showers, and toilets.

  • Jacumã Beach is known for aerobunda, a rudimentary version of ziplining that takes riders from the top of the hill into the freshwater lagoon below.

How to get there

Jacumã Beach is located on the northern coast of Brazil, 20.5 miles (33 kilometers) from Natal. It is about an hour drive from Joao Pessoa, the state of Paraíba's capital city. Guided dune buggy tours from Natal offer a unique way to get to and from the beach, with other stops along the way.

When to get there

Even in the high season (December–March), Jacumã Beach doesn’t get crowded, making it a good spot to escape the hustle and bustle of Brazil. While the summer season brings hot, sunny days to large parts of the country, you’ll still experience heat and humidity in the northern regions in winter (June–September).

Beach etiquette of Brazil

No matter what, you’ll probably stand out as a tourist on the beaches of Brazil, but if you follow some basic tips, you can attempt to blend in. First, Brazilians do not bring towels to the beach. Instead, they use a sarong (or canga) for sunbathing or rent a chair. Don’t pack food; instead buy from local vendors. To prevent pickpocketing, don’t bring electronics, jewelry, or your wallet. Bring only a small amount of cash.
