POINT OF INTEREST

Jalan Asia Afrika

Bandung, West Java

One of Bandung’s historically significant streets, Jalan Asia Afrika is a bustling and culture-rich thoroughfare in the capital of the West Java province. It’s home to the Asia Afrika Monument, commemorating the historic conference between the two continents, and Gedung Merdeka. This historic building housed the event and is now home to a museum.

The basics

Other highlights on Jalan Asia Afrika include its colonial-era architecture that reflects Dutch rule, and Alun-Alun Bandung (Bandung Square), distinguished by its green space and twin-minaret mosque. Many Bandung sightseeing tours highlight the square, and tend to combine a wander down the street with other important attractions such as Gedung Sate, the West Java government seat renowned for its Indo-European architecture.

Things to know before you go

  • The even surfaces of Jalan Asia Afrika make it accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
  • You’ll find plenty of restaurants and hotels here, along with coffee shops using the beans that this Indonesian region is famous for.
  • There are always street performers and buskers along Jalan Asia Afrika, so bring some small denominations of cash if you want to support their performances.

How to get there

Jalan Asia Afrika is in central Bandung; the Koridor 2 bus travels along it and stops at various points, but the best way to explore it is on foot. If you’re coming from other parts of the city, Grab and Gojek are convenient and cost-effective rideshare apps used throughout Bandung.

When to get there

The best time to visit Jalan Asia Afrika is in April during the Asia Africa Festival, which celebrates the fusion of culture in this part of Indonesia. Otherwise, evenings and weekends see the area at its liveliest, but early morning is best if you want to admire the building facades at a relaxed pace without the crowds.

What to see on Braga Street

Just a few minutes’ walk from Jalan Asia Afrika, you’ll find Jalan Braga (Braga Street), whose historical architecture contributes to Bandung’s nickname of the “Paris of Java.” A wonderful place to wander, it’s famous for its cafés, which serve delicious Javanese coffee alongside traditional Indonesian dishes such as nasi goreng (fried rice).
