The basics

Jamibiani Beach is a popular stop on day tours of Zanzibar and is often visited in conjunction with other destinations in the island's southern reaches. While the chance to laze about on Jambiani Beach alone is a big draw for visitors to the island, there's also plenty to experience in Jambiani Village. Tours led by residents will give you insight into life in the village, and many focus on women-led industries, such as coconut husk rope weaving.

• The waters at the beach are generally calm, making it an excellent option for families with kids.

• Bring sun protection and your own towel and swimsuit. Bring cash for souvenirs and drinks on the beach.

How to get there

Jambiani Beach is located in southeastern Zanzibar, about an hour and 20 minutes from Zanzibar City by car. The easiest way to get there is by joining a tour, arranging a transfer, or hiring a taxi. Tours often include a visit to the beach and a trip to the nearby Jozani Forest.

When to get there

The best time to visit the beach, and Zanzibar in general, is during the dry season, which runs from mid-June through September. There's also a short dry season in January and early February that typically offers pleasant weather. Visit the beach early in the day to avoid crowds.

Visiting Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park

Many tours to Jambiani Beach stop at Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, more commonly called the Jozani Forest, en route to the shore. The forest is among the more popular attractions in Zanzibar for hiking and nature walks, owing to its tropical birds and abundance of endemic red colobus monkeys. If you want to visit the park, you must join a tour or hire a guide, as independent visits are prohibited.
