Janubio Salt Pans

Calle los Hervideros, Yaiza, Lanzarote, 35570

The last trace of Lanzarote’s once-booming salt industry, the Janubio Salt Pans are still the largest in the Canary Islands. The patchwork of salt pools makes for a mesmerizing sight, stretching along the banks of the Janubio Lagoon, and summer visitors can witness the salt being harvested by hand.

The basics

Guided tours of the Janubio Salt Pans include a walking tour of the lagoon and salt pans, which produce up to 10,000 tons of salt each year and are the last remaining in Lanzarote. Learn about the salt production process, using water pumped from the neighboring lagoon into the different pans, where the water is evaporated and the salt crystals are harvested. Get hands-on experience harvesting some of the salt, learn how different types of salt including fleur de sel are sourced, and sample some 100% natural Canarian salt.

Things to know before you go

  • Salt pan tours are a fun interactive activity for kids and children under 5 are free.
  • The Janubio Lagoon is a popular spot for bird watchers—look out for osprey, black winged stilts, and common sandpiper.
  • There is a shop on-site where you can purchase Canarian salt and other artisan products.

How to get there

The Janubio Salt Pans are located on the southwest coast of Lanzarote, about 5 miles (8 kilometers) north of Playa Blanca. There is no public transport to the site, so you will need your own transport or to join a tour.

When to get there

Salt collection takes place in spring (May) and fall (September/October) and it’s most interesting to visit the salt pans at these times. Tours take place throughout the summer months too and advanced booking is recommended.

Lanzarote Cultural Attractions and Traditions

Lanzarote is not only famous for its salt production—it’s also renowned for its unique wines and traditional handicrafts. Discover the island’s vineyards on a tour of the La Geria wine region and sample Lanzarote’s Malvasia wines, grown in the rich volcanic soils. Afterwards, visit La Casa-Museo del Campesino, where you can tour artisan workshops, purchase traditional island handicrafts, and take part in crafts workshops. Visitors may also want to browse the lively markets in Teguise, where artisans come from all around the island to sell their handicrafts.
