Jimenoa Falls (Salto de Jimenoa)

Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic, 41000

Situated in a lush rainforest near Jarabacoa, Jimenoa Falls (Salto de Jimenoa or Salto de Jimenoa Dos) is one of several waterfalls in the mountainous region. Tucked in a canyon near a hydroelectric dam, the 141-foot (40-meter) waterfall is easily accessible and a popular scenic and adventure destination.

The basics

Jimenoa Falls is included in some tours that visit several waterfalls in the Jarabacoa area but it’s also easy to visit independently. You can access it via a recently renovated riverside walkway, staircases, and three pedestrian suspension bridges. Soak up the scenery on the way or cool off with a dip in the river of the pools beneath the waterfall, though take care not to get too close to the falls itself due to strong undercurrents.

Things to know before you go

  • There is a small entrance fee to access the waterfall.

  • Don’t confuse this waterfall with a similarly named waterfall nearby, Salto de Jimenoa Uno.

  • Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes with a good grip. Water shoes will also come in handy if you plan to enter the water.

  • Bring a swimsuit, sunscreen, insect repellent, towel, and change of clothing.

How to get there

Jimenoa Waterfall is 6 miles (10 kilometers) southeast of Jarabacoa, which is 31 miles (50 kilometers) south of Santiago de los Caballeros. There’s a parking area at the trailhead to the falls. You can also take a taxi from Jarabacoa or join a tour, which usually include transport.

When to get there

The waterfall is open from 8am to 5pm daily, throughout the year. It’s one of the more popular waterfalls in the area since it’s so easily accessible. Visit in the early morning and avoid weekends and public holidays to avoid crowds. The rainy season runs from April to November.

How to visit Salto de Jimenoa Dos

Causing some confusion is another waterfall nearby of a similar name, Salto de Jimenoa Dos. Located inside a ravine off the road to Constanza, Salto de Jimenoa Uno is a 246-foot (75-meter) waterfall. There’s also a small fee to access the falls, which is reachable via a steep hike downhill.
