Jose Cuervo Distillery (Fábrica La Rojeña)

Jose Cuervo 73, Tequila, Jalisco

Head to the Jose Cuervo Distillery (Fábrica La Rojeña), and discover one of Mexico’s most famous traditional drinks. From the agave to the bottle, learn about the process of making (and tasting) tequila. A popular attraction in a tiny town, the terracotta-colored distillery is busy but accommodating, and the shop is the place to stock up on factory-priced tequila.

Established in 1795, the legendary Jose Cuervo Distillery, part of the UNESCO-listed landscape of Jalisco, has evolved from a small family-owned business to one of the world’s foremost tequila distilleries. Accordingly, it’s a prime draw in the town of Tequila, meaning you have your choice of guided tours of the distillery, some of which offer personalized VIP experiences. Tastings are typically included.

  • Drink plenty of water. Hydration is key in sometimes-baking-hot Tequila, especially if you’re sipping spirit samples.

  • Some areas of the Jose Cuervo Distillery are inaccessible to wheelchairs.

  • The distillery runs guided tours in English and Spanish several times per day.

  • No need to join a tour to visit the foyer, bar, or shop.

  • Photos aren’t allowed in the main factory.

You can easily reach the town of Tequila from Guadalajara, which is about 40 miles (64 kilometers) away. Buses run regularly from Guadalajara’s Old Bus Station (in Central Vieja), while tours typically offer round-trip transportation in air-conditioned vehicles. For a luxurious all-inclusive experience, climb aboard the Jose Cuervo Express train, which goes directly to the distillery.

Jose Cuervo Distillery is open every day. Weekends and public holidays are the busiest times to visit; midweek mornings are the quietest.

The Jose Cuervo Distillery hogs the Tequila limelight. However, there’s plenty more for curious travelers to do in town. Maybe explore another tequila factory or two, followed by a stroll through the central square. Then pick up a skewer of grilled corn on the cob before grabbing a traditional cantarito (mixed tequila drink) served in a clay mug.
