Kalakuta Museum
7 Gbemisola St., Allen 100281, Ikeja, Lagos, South West Nigeria
Set in the former home of afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti (who advocated for human rights and anti-corruption through his music), Lagos' Kalakuta Museum exhibits Fela’s personal belongings, such as clothing, musical instruments, album covers, and household items. You can also peek inside his bedroom and living room, which remain largely untouched.
The basics
Staff at the museum offer guided tours that help you delve deeper into the life and work of the renowned museum. Some Lagos tours combine the museum with the New Afrika Shrine, an open-air entertainment center that hosts the Felebration festival every year, which celebrates Afrobeat music and culture. Other multi-day tours stop at the museum, along with other top Lagos attractions such as Lekki Market, hailed as Nigeria's largest art museum.
Things to know before you go
There’s a bar at the museum that serves cold drinks and a variety of snacks.
A small gift shop sells souvenirs.
There’s a small admission fee to visit the museum, which equates to around US$2.
The 3-story building isn’t equipped with elevators, so only the bottom floor is accessible to visitors with limited mobility.
How to get there
From central Lagos, Kalakuta Republic Museum is a 20-minute drive via Bayo Shodipo/Ikorodu-Igbobi Rd/Ikorodu - Lagos Rd/Ikorodu-Ososun Rd/A1 and Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way. You can also take the Iyana Oworo - Ikeja bus route and disembark at the Balogun stop, from which the museum is a 10-minute walk.
When to get there
Kalakuta Republic Museum is open from mid-morning to early evening, Monday through Friday. The best time to visit Lagos, in general, is between June and August, when skies are generally clear, and the humidity hasn’t reached its peak.
What to buy at Lekki Market
A hidden gem off the Lekki-Epe expressway, this bustling center for arts and crafts exhibits wares from across Africa. Though busy, it’s well organized and is jam-packed with wooden sculptures, masks, necklaces, and jewelry. Haggling prices are part of the experience, and the best time to visit is during the morning to avoid Lagos’ notorious traffic.
