POINT OF INTEREST

Katmai National Park and Preserve

King Salmon, AK, 99613

Located in the remote southwestern corner of Alaska, Katmai National Park is one of the world’s best places to view brown bears in their natural habitat. In summer, they gather in the streams to feast on the abundant salmon. The bears are accustomed to humans so you can view them safely up-close for an unforgettable viewing experience.

The basics

Although the park is remote, it is easily accessible via a floatplane flight from Anchorage or Homer. The easiest and safest way to visit the park is with a guided bear viewing or wildlife photography trip. These often include a round-trip flight to the park, hikes with experienced guides, and safety gear such as a satellite phone and emergency kit. Kayaking, canoeing, and fishing are also popular activities in the park.

Things to know before you go

  • A must-visit for national park enthusiasts and wildlife lovers.
  • There is no entrance fee for Katmai National Park.
  • Be prepared for wet conditions; pack extra layers, rain gear, and waterproof boots.
  • No Wi-Fi or cell phone service is available in the park outside the King Salmon Visitor Center.
  • Katmai National Park bear viewing trips are not wheelchair accessible.

How to get there

Katmai National Park is located on the Alaska Peninsula in the southwestern corner of Alaska, northwest of Kodiak Island. Most destinations in Katmai National Park are accessed via air taxi from Anchorage, Homer, Kodiak, or King Salmon. Private and chartered boats can access the Pacific Coast of Katmai.

When to get there

Katmai National Park is open year round, although the operating days and hours vary by season for the Brooks Camp Visitor Center and the King Salmon Visitor Center. Most guided tours of Katmai National Park are offered late-May through mid-September. June, July, and August are prime bear viewing months.

Brooks Camp Bear Viewing

Brooks Camp is the park’s most popular and accessible bear viewing site. During the summer months, brown bears gather to feed on the salmon in the Brooks River, and several viewing platforms along the river provide a safe and enjoyable bear watching experience. Bear viewing is best at Brooks Camp in July and September.
