Kells Monastic Site
Townparks, Kells, Meath, A82 AY20
The word Kells may bring to mind the Book of Kells, an ancient manuscript currently displayed at Trinity College Library in Dublin. However, the book does not originate in Dublin; it was written by monks at the Kells Monastic Site in County Meath. Much of the original monastery remains intact today, and visitors can explore the site to see massive stone crosses, a round tower, a sundial, and preserved historic streets.
The basics
The Kells Monastic Site adds context and color to one of Ireland’s most popular attractions: the Book of Kells. After seeing the ancient manuscript on display in Dublin, many visitors travel about 40 miles (64 kilometers) outside the capital city into County Meath to explore the monastic site where the book was written. The religious settlement here dates back to 553 AD and was the home of the Book of Kells for over 800 years. Stop into the local tourist center first, then explore the grounds at your own pace.
Things to know before you go
The Kells Monastic Site is a must for history and art buffs, especially those interested in stone crosses.
Wear comfortable, waterproof shoes as the ground is uneven throughout the site (and inaccessible to wheelchairs or strollers).
Be sure to bring a waterproof jacket or umbrella as weather can change quickly, and rain showers are expected.
How to get there
The Kells Monastic Site is located in the town of Kells in the Boyne Valley, County Meath, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) outside Dublin City. Visitors with a rental car will take the M3 motorway from Dublin and Exit 10 for Kells South. Alternatively, several tours include round-trip transportation from Dublin. Public transportation options include a bus from Busaras in Dublin city center to Kells.
When to get there
The Kells Monastic Site is open 24 hours a day. While the summer season sees the most visitors, it’s possible to visit during summer evenings and wander the monastery grounds with few other people. The Book of Kells in Dublin draws significant crowds throughout the year, but the Kells Monastic Site is rarely crowded.
Explore the Kells Heritage Trail
The monastic site is only one historic landmark in the town of Kells, which is home to a heritage trail for exploring local history even further. Pick up a map at the tourist office and continue beyond the monastic site to see the gravestones of St John’s Cemetery, an ancient well, and the Kells Courthouse.
