Kiama Blowhole

Kiama, New South Wales, 2533

Witness the ocean’s force as it pushes water up through the rocks, creating the spout of the Kiama Blowhole—the biggest natural blowhole in the world. Kiarama-a is believed to be the Aboriginal term, meaning “the noise of the sea.” Explosions of water can reach up to 80 feet (25 meters), which makes for quite the natural spectacle.

The basics

Thanks to its Aboriginal cultural significance, the Kiama Blowhole is a regular feature of tours of Sydney’s south coast and the highlands—these typically also cover the 260-foot (80-meter) Fitzroy Falls, the snake-shaped Sea Cliff Bridge, and Kangaroo Valley, hailed as one of Australia's most scenic spots. There is also a lighthouse overhead and a smaller blowhole fittingly called “Little Blowhole” a few minutes’ walk away. Picnic facilities and rock pools are present beside the blowhole.

Things to know before you go

  • The viewing platform that overlooks the blowhole is accessible for both wheelchairs and strollers.

  • There’s a small café and visitor information center on the site of the blowhole.

  • Kiama Blowhole is free to visit.

How to get there

From central Sydney, the Kiama Blowhole is a 2-hour drive via the M1 road—there is a parking lot nearby. You can also take the South Coast train line all the way from Wolli Creek to the town of Kiama, which is a 15-minute walk from the blowhole.

When to get there

Though the blowhole is open 24 hours a day, to see the water in all its glory you’ll need to arrive when there’s a good swell. For the most intense eruptions, visit during high tide when there’s a southerly swell—check the surf forecast for the most accurate info.

Following the Kiama Coast Walk trail

With two of its three sections starting or ending at the Kiama Blowhole, the Kiama Coast Walk trail is a great way to see more of Sydney’s stunning south coast. The entire stretch is around 12 miles (20 kilometers), but even if you just follow part of it, you’re likely to see pristine beaches, rock formations, and views of the Pacific Ocean.
