Kirkjufell Mountain

Iceland, Iceland

Kirkjufell (Church Mountain) is one of Iceland's most photographed peaks, towering 1,519 feet (463 meters) over the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Famous for its unique, steeple-like shape, it starred as Arrow Head Mountain in Game of Thrones. A geological wonder, it captivates photographers and nature lovers from around the globe.

The basics

Travelers often explore Kirkjufell Mountain on tours from Reykjavik, which typically also visit seaside villages such as Arnarstapi, black sand beaches at Djupalonssandur, and the Snaefellsjokull Glacier. Included pickup and drop-off in Reykjavik saves you the hassle of organizing transfers and a guide provides commentary along the way. Other tours combine Kirkjufell Mountain with unique experiences such as sampling homemade Icelandic meals at a horse ranch. Climbing Kirkjufell is challenging and only suitable for experienced hikers.

Things to know before you go

  • Inexperienced hikers should avoid attempting the trail without a guide, as it can be very steep with exposed trails.

  • The hike to Kirkjufell usually takes about 1.5 hours one way, and there are designated viewpoints for fantastic photos, including the left side of Kirkjufellsfoss Waterfall.

  • Wear sturdy walking shoes and layered clothing for changing weather conditions and muddy terrain.

  • It’s recommended to bring snacks with you on a hike; alternatively, you can dine out in the local town of Grundarfjordur.

How to get there

Kirkjufell Mountain is easily accessible by car from Reykjavik. Simply take Ring Road 1 north, passing through an undersea tunnel near Borgarnes. From there, follow Road 54 to Grundarfjörður and you will see Kirkjufell. This scenic drive takes approximately 2.5 hours, making it a perfect day trip from the capital. For those who prefer not to drive, multiple tour options depart from Reykjavik.

When to get there

The best time to visit Kirkjufell Mountain depends on what you want to experience. Summer brings vibrant greenery and midnight sun, while the snow-covered peak in winter is a stunning backdrop for the northern lights. Optimal times for photography are sunrise and sunset, and peak tour hours are around midday. Consider camping at Grundarfjörður to see Kirkjufell's beauty by day and night.

Hiking to Kirkjufellsfoss Waterfall

While hiking at Kirkjufell, don’t miss the nearby Kirkjufellsfoss Waterfall, also known as Church Mountain Falls. Adjacent parking and a direct path to the falls offer easy access for close-up views and stunning photo opportunities so you can capture mountain scenery and a cascading waterfall.
