POINT OF INTEREST

Kitzsteinhorn

Kesselfallstrasse 60, Kaprun, Salzburg, 5723

Just south of Salzburg in Austria’s Hohe Tauern National Park, the 10,508-foot (3,203-meter) Kitzsteinhorn mountain and glacier dominates the Zell am See and Kaprun region. With glacier snow until summer and spectacular scenery all year, the Kitzsteinhorn is a magnet for skiers, hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, and sightseers.

The Basics

The Kitzsteinhorn offers plenty of year-round attractions. Visitors ride cable cars to the summit to experience everything from skiing to panoramic vantage points. Attractions open all year include the Top of Salzburg mountain-viewing platform at 9,842 feet (3,000 meters), a cinema, and restaurants; while summer draws include walking trails and a snow-laden Ice Arena. In winter, spring, and fall, skiing and snow sports fans arrive for the Kitzsteinhorn’s glacier runs, snowparks, and trails.

Travelers can visit the Kitzsteinhorn independently or on tours. Prebook admission to the Top of Salzburg viewing platform online to save time during your vacation—tickets include access to the cable cars, cinema, and other entertainments. Alternatively, book a guided tour to Hohe Tauern National Park from Salzburg that showcases its natural treasures, including the Kitzsteinhorn.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Kitzsteinhorn is a must-visit for hikers, sightseers, and snow sports lovers.

  • Some cable cars offer wheelchair access, but the viewing platforms do not.

  • Bring sunscreen and shades, whatever the time of year.

  • Be prepared for colder temperatures at the summit than down below.

  • Check the day’s forecast: Cable car operating times are dependent on the weather.

How to Get There

The Kitzsteinhorn is easily accessible from Salzburg, about 72 miles (116 kilometers) to the north. Drivers can take the A10 and B311 to Kaprun and then follow signs to the Kitzsteinhorn’s Gletscherjet gondolas from there. Alternatively, regular trains from Salzburg run to Zell am See, from which a taxi or bus 660 can ferry you to Kitzsteinhorn. Daily morning buses also run from Salzburg to Kitzsteinhorn, and gondolas whisk skiers to the glaciers directly from Kaprun.

When to Get There

The Kitzsteinhorn is open year-round, but lift times can change with weather and snow conditions. The main Gletscherjet Valley Station—with gondolas to the summit station—is open daily from morning until afternoon. Free parking is available at the station. Cable cars to the viewing platforms get very busy during peak periods, so arrive early to beat the main crowds.

Kid-Friendly Fun at the Kitzsteinhorn

There’s plenty for kids at the Kitzsteinhorn, especially in summer. In July and August, the snowy Ice Arena offers tobogganing, slide-sheet sledging, and snowball fights that the youngsters will love. Other family activities include easy hiking routes, biking trails, and action-packed adventure playgrounds.
