POINT OF INTEREST

Kluze Fortress

Bovec, Slovenia

Towering over a 230-foot (70-meter) ravine on the Koritnica River, Kluze Fortress is a 19th-century fort built on the site of a 15th-century original. World War I buffs will be intrigued by its role as an Austro-Hungarian garrison, but it’s worth visiting to admire the views alone, even if you don’t have an interest in military history.

The basics

After admiring its forest-shrouded surroundings, you can learn more about Kluze Fortress’ strategic WWI role at a permanent exhibition, which outlines its turbulent history. You can also admire fortified walls and gun emplacements, and start hikes that reveal the natural beauty of the Julian Alps from here. Some private tours of the Soça Valley stop at the fort, while many white-water rafting excursions on the Soça River pass by.

Things to know before you go

  • There are few facilities near the Kluze Fortress, so pack water and snacks.
  • Information panels at the fortress are in Slovenian and English.
  • Bring cash as there’s a modest admission fee to visit the fortress.

How to get there

From the town center of Bovec, Kluze Fortress is 2.8 miles (4.5 kilometers) away. It’s a 6-minute drive via the Bovec-Žaga Road and the Predel-Bovec/Ravni Laz road, along which there are many scenic stops. No public transport services the fort, so you’ll need your own vehicle.

When to get there

Kluze Fortress is open from June through September from mid-morning until late afternoon. This region of Slovenia is best to visit from spring through fall, as the winter months can see heavy snowfall that makes road access difficult.

Where to find more history in the area

For more history and even more dramatic views of the area, continue up Mt. Rombon to Fort Hermann, built in the 1900s to support Kluve Fortress below. The route to the upper fortress takes you via an atmospheric stone tunnel, which you’ll need to bring a flashlight to navigate. The walk takes around 30 minutes and is a fun adventure.
