Kochi Harbour
Willingdon Island, Kochi, Kerala, 682003
One of India’s major seaports, Kochi’s harbor is up there with the world’s most scenic waterways, providing one of the few all-weather safe harbors on India’s west coast. In the center of the harbor, between Fort Cochin’s promontory and the mainland, is man-made Wellington Island, the area’s main seaport and transport terminal.
The basics
Kochi Harbour’s channels and reclaimed developments were carried out in the early 20th century, establishing the infrastructure that makes Kochi and Ernakulam Kerala’s commercial shipping capital today. The massive container cranes, cargo docks, marinas, shipyards, cruise facilities and Indian Navy operations are in sharp contrast to the traditional fishing boats that dot the harbor, and the traditional Chinese fishing nets that trawl the waters.
Things to know before you go
*Kochi Harbour is a must-visit for first-time visitors to the city as well as shipping and maritime history enthusiasts. *Cruise ship passengers should note that ships generally dock at Willingdon Island. *It’s not wise to swim in the harbor due to pollution and unpredictable currents.
How to get there
Kochi Harbour is a year-round destination, but it's certainly more pleasant to visit outside of the rainy monsoon season (June through September or October). November through March tend to be the most pleasant months to visit, when it's neither too rainy nor too hot, while April and May temperatures can be sweltering.
When to get there
There are plenty of ways to experience Kochi Harbour. Ferries and bridges provide links to the Ernakulam mainland, and many visitors to Fort Kochi take a boat to Wellington Island or Ernakulam. Another way to see the harbor is by taking a stroll along the waterfront promenade, Marine Drive, that runs along the peninsula.
Kochi’s Famous Chinese Fishing Nets
One of Kochi’s most popular attractions is its Chinese Fishing Nets, which can be spotted all over the harbor. These permanent structures feature large nets that can be lowered into and out of the water using pulleys and ropes; the origin of their name can be traced back to their supposed introduction by a Chinese explorer in the 1400s. If you want to see them in action, head to the beach at Fort Kochi right before sunset.
