Koh Yao Yai (Ko Yao Yai)
Phuket, Phang-nga
Sister island to Koh Yao Noi, Koh Yao Yai (also written Ko Yao Yai) is an unspoiled gem that sprawls amid the karst seascapes of Phang Nga Bay (Ao Phang Nga). The coast offers white sand beaches, fishing villages (many on stilts), and mangrove forests; inland are timeless landscapes of orchards, rice fields, and rubber plantations.
The Basics
Koh Yao Yai is a large island by Phang Nga Bay standards, stretching around 13 miles (20 kilometers) with accommodations from luxe to backpacker. Make a short stop at Koh Yao Yai on an island-hopping tour of Phang Nga Bay from Phuket or Krabi, by speedboat or long-tail boat. Or take a fishing trip, mangrove cruise, or try water sports such as snorkeling, diving, and kayaking. Hands-on cultural experiences include batik cloth and tapping rubber.
Things to Know Before You Go
Koh Yao Yai is a great choice for travelers looking for a sleepier, more traditional Thai island experience.
Many of the Koh Yao Yai community are Muslims, but alcohol is easy to come by.
Few of the boats that connect to Koh Yao Yai are wheelchair friendly, although strollers are easily managed.
How to Get There
Koh Yao Yai sits almost halfway between Phuket island (to the west) and mainland Krabi (to the east), guarding the entrance to Phang Nga Bay. It can only be reached by boat. The nearest airports are on Phuket and Krabi, with regular ferry connections via Ao Nang near Krabi and several Phuket piers. Private companies offer direct boats to other destinations, including the Phi Phi Islands.
When to Get There
Phang Nga Bay’s high season is December and January. The dry season continues into April, and the rainy season generally falls between June and November. The bay is sheltered, making island-hopping an option year-round, but trash can be an issue on Yao Yai beaches later in the rainy season.
Best Islands in Phang Nga Bay
A national park known for its marine landscapes and karst islands, Phang Nga Bay (Ao Phang Nga) is a signature day trip from Phuket and Krabi. Favorite islands include James Bond Island, a narrow pinnacle that appeared inThe Man with the Golden Gun; Koh Panyee, known for its stilt village below the cliffs; and Koh Hong, with secret lagoons. Base yourself on Koh Yao Yai to beat the crowds to nearby islands in high season.
