Kozjak Waterfall (Slap Kozjak)
Kozjak, Kobarid, Slovenia, 5222
Located at the edge of Triglav National Park, Kozjak Waterfall is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Slovenia. Visitors can follow the Kobarid Historical Trail through pristine forests to reach this picturesque natural wonder. The reward is a 49-foot (15-meter) -high waterfall in a moss-covered karst cave that cascades into an emerald–colored pool below.
The basics
As a photogenic location, many photography enthusiasts visit Kozjak Waterfall during specialized workshops to discover a shortlist of Slovenia’s most photogenic outdoor sights. Additionally, the waterfall is a featured stop on private guided tours from Ljubljana, which also explores the Soca Valley and Kobarid Museum. For those seeking a more rugged experience, camping adventures provide the perfect option, while independent travelers can easily access the waterfall on foot from the nearby town of Kobarid.
Things to know before you go
The waterfall isn’t wheelchair-accessible, requiring hikes through forests and uneven terrain.
The pool under the waterfall is not recommended for bathing. Consider the bathing areas near the Soca or Nadiza rivers instead.
Wear hiking boots, as the bridges on the route can sometimes be slippery.
How to get there
If you plan to hike to Kozjak Waterfall, set off from Kobarid towards Napoleon Bridge. Cross the bridge, then after about 45 minutes on a well-marked trail, you should reach the waterfall. Alternatively, you can drive from Kobarid across Napoleon Bridge and along a road on the left towards Dreznick. After around 492 feet (150 meters), there’s a parking lot. From there, it’s roughly a 30-minute hike.
When to get there
To avoid the crowds at Kozjak Waterfall, plan your visit in the morning, ideally before 11am. If you're looking for the best time of year, consider visiting during the spring (particularly April through May) or fall (from September through October). These seasons offer milder weather and fewer visitors than the busy summer months.
Other highlights on the Kobarid Historical Trail
The Kobarid Historical Trail offers a mix of natural beauty and historical landmarks. On the way to the Kozjak Waterfall, you can see Napoleon's Bridge, which dates back to the early 19th century, and the scenic Soca River, famous for its emerald waters. The trail also passes by the Tonocov Grad archaeological site and the Kobarid Museum, known for its World War I exhibits.
