Krn Lake

Bovec, Slovenia

Located within the Triglav National Park, Krn Lake is the largest Alpine lake in Slovenia. In the shadow of Mt. Krn, the lake sits 4,560 feet (1,391 meters) above sea level, surrounded by a landscape of Alpine flowers and fauna. It is a mecca for nature lovers and offers incredible views of the surrounding mountain landscape.

The basics

You can access Krn Lake via a moderate forested trail from the small valley of Lepena below the lakes. You’ll ascend around 2,300 feet (700 meters) during this well-marked route, which typically takes hikers 2–3 hours to complete. Once you reach the lake, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a picnic on its shores. The Krn mountain range is also popular with rock climbers and mountaineers, though you’ll need a permit and specialized equipment to attempt the climbs.

Things to know before you go

  • There are mountain huts at Krn Lake where you can spend the night and wake up to wonderful views of the mist-shrouded lake, but they operate seasonal openings.
  • A rustic restaurant serves hot meals and drinks but is only open during the peak summer months.
  • Sturdy shoes and a warm jacket are essential for this hike, as temperatures get colder the further up you go.
  • Swimming in the lake is not permitted.

How to get there

You can start the Krn Lake trek from one of two starting points: The most popular is the Lepeni Mountain Hut, but you can also begin from Koča na planini Kuhinja slightly higher up. From Bovec, the trailhead is a 30-minute drive via the scenic Trenta-Bovec and Lepena.

When to get there

The best time to visit Krn Lake is during the late spring and summer months from May through September when the flora surrounding it is at its brightest and in full bloom. Visit outside of the European school holiday if you want to beat the crowds, which take place in July and August.

Adventurous activities in Bovec

Bovec is one of the top destinations in Slovenia to enjoy adventure activities, thanks to its stunning natural scenery and mountain landscapes. One of the most exciting sports to enjoy is white-water rafting on the Soça River, where rapids can reach Class 4-5 during spring when snow begins to melt. The region also has an enormous zipline you can ride over the peaks.
