Kuiseb Pass
Walvis Bay, Namibia
Sweeping views across golden hills, Kuiseb Canyon, and Carp Cliff make Kuiseb Pass a highlight of exploring Namibia’s unpaved C14 road. With an elevation of 2,969 feet (905 meters) above sea level, the pass is a place to stretch your legs, snap some photos, and take in the gorgeous landscape of a sparsely populated region.
The basics
The spectacular C14 road where Kuiseb Pass is located features dramatic vistas as it winds from coastal Walvis Bay to the settlement of Goageb, a 400-mile (643-kilometer) route that requires a rugged vehicle. Slow down to enjoy the views along a gravel track with occasional steep drop-offs into deep canyons; also consider a tour and let an expert lead the way. This area is also home to “Henno Martin’s cave,” a shelter used by two German geologists hiding out from authorities during World War II.
Things to know before you go
Some drivers recommend lowering your tire pressure before driving the C14.
Take care while navigating the steep hill following Kuiseb Pass.
Check weather reports before departure, as heavy rain can make the C14 impassible.
How to get there
Many visitors to Kuiseb Pass will come via Walvis Bay or Swakopmund. Travelers coming by air touch town at Walvis Bay Airport (WVB) using direct flights from Cape Town and Johannesburg. From there, it’s easiest to get around via private car, whether you’re renting a 4WD vehicle, hiring a driver, or joining an organized tour that provides transportation.
When to get there
The best time to visit Namibia is between May and October, to experience the country with mild temperatures and dry weather. Dry conditions also draw wildlife to watering holes, ensuring great game viewing during these peak-season months. While off-season travel means fewer crowds, the November–April rainy season can bring wet weather that makes the C14 muddy and sometimes impassable.
Best road trips in Namibia
Epic landscapes and wide-open roads make Namibia a road-tripper’s dream—as long as you don’t mind a few bumps. Great views between Windhoek and Sossusvlei make this 245-mile (395-kilometer) route one top option. Active explorers also love the 738-mile (1,260-kilometer) trip into Southern Namibia using the road from Windhoek to Noordoewer, passing Lüderitz, Kolmanskop, and Fish River Canyon along the way.
