Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Memorial Park

Accra, GHA

One of Accra’s most important monuments (and prettiest green spaces), the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Memorial Park pays tribute to Ghana’s first president, who led the country to its independence in 1957. The newly modernized memorial now houses an expanded museum, a mausoleum, and other commemorative attractions.

Kwame Nkrumah was one of the continent’s most important 20th-century leaders; Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Memorial Park reflect his seismic legacy. Built on the British polo grounds where Nkrumah declared Ghana’s independence from colonial rule, the memorial’s central highlight is the marble mausoleum where Nkrumah and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah, were laid to rest.

But that’s just the beginning. You can spend time exploring its fountains and gardens; take in the larger-than-life statue of Nkrumah; and head into the museum, which showcases many of the leader’s personal effects, from cars and photographs to clothing and letters. This landmark also features on many Accra sightseeing tours.

  • You can buy admission tickets to the memorial when you arrive; Ghanaian visitors receive discounted entry.

  • Since its renovation, the memorial now has a restaurant.

  • The memorial has a gift shop that sells souvenirs.

Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Memorial Park is on Prof. Atta Mills High Street, moments from Accra’s waterfront. Taxis and rideshare services are the easiest way to visit, though the landmark can also be reached by tro-tro minibusses.

Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Memorial Park is open daily, from early in the morning until late in the evening. Aim to visit on a good weather day so you can make the most of its tranquil setting. Note that visiting hours are sometimes subject to unexpected changes.

Once you’ve visited Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Memorial Park, it's easy to continue your sightseeing in Accra. The memorial is conveniently located near many of Accra’s other top attractions. Browse the wares at nearby Makola Market, the city’s largest open-air market; head to Black Star Square, another important independence monument; and discover the work of local craftspeople at the adjacent Accra Arts Centre.
