La Molina

Oficina Central Estació de La Molina Edifici Telecabina Alp, Alp, Girona, 17537

Set in the Catalonian Pyrenees, within reach of hubs like Barcelona and Girona, La Molina is one of Spain’s most popular ski resorts. Incorporated in 1943, it was the country’s first such resort, but that doesn’t mean it’s stuck in the past: today it’s home to 68 slopes, the biggest superpipe in the region, and a large snowpark.

The basics

Spain’s oldest ski resort, La Molina has earned a reputation for being laid-back and family-friendly, though it’s also a worthy destination for serious winter sports enthusiasts. With 44 miles (71 kilometers) of ski slopes, a gondola, multiple chair lifts, and a snowpark comprising a superpipe and circuits for freestyle riders, it offers a wealth of wintry options. Relaxing après-ski and resort amenities are equally plentiful, including three different restaurants, a mountaintop lodge, and a spa. A children’s play park, plus snow tubing and sledding slopes, are tailored to young visitors, while those visiting in the summer can take advantage of a treetop adventure park with ziplines, plus Segway tours.

Things to know before you go

  • To navigate La Molina with ease, download its app to access its map, check hours for its establishments, and receive up-to-date status reports on its ski runs. You can also buy and reload your ski pass online.
  • Book day passes or multi-day passes, or choose from a range of season packages, depending on the length of your trip and how often you plan to visit.
  • Ski, snowboard, and snowshoe equipment rentals are available at the resort, as well as ski wear.
  • On-site ski and snowboard schools are available for first-time skiers (including a dedicated area for children), and for those looking to improve their skills and familiarity.

How to Get There

La Molina is in the Catalonian Pyrenees, about 2 hours by car from Barcelona (via the C-16 or C-17) and Girona (via the C-25 and C-17). A direct train route (the RENFE R3) links Barcelona and other Catalonian cities with La Molina station, while the resort offers transportation from the train station through an internal bus service. A SkiBus service also links Barcelona with La Molina.

When to Get There

The resort is open year-round, with access to its slopes from morning until early evening. Winter is the high season, and its ski season typically runs from early December to mid-April, with limited hours on Christmas Day and Easter. Summer is another good time to visit; take advantage of the hiking and mountain-biking opportunities available in the Pyrenees.

Masella

La Molina isn’t the only ski resort in the area. Just next door is the Masella Ski Resort, and together the two form the collective Alp 2500 Resort. They’re linked by the Cadí-Moixeró Gondola, and it’s possible to book a combination ski pass that gives visitors access to both resorts. Masella operates a similar range of pistes and off-piste amenities as La Molina, and thanks to its northerly slopes, has one of the longest ski seasons in the Pyrenees.
