POINT OF INTEREST

La Morra

La Morra, Cuneo

Pretty inside and out, the medieval hill town of La Morra has both a delightful historic center and gorgeous surrounding wine country, part of the UNESCO-listed Le Langhe. La Morra is one of the main villages in the heart of Piedmont’s Barolo-producing vineyards, and a popular destination for wine lovers.

The basics

Oenophiles flock to the town of La Morra to sample the local Barolo, among Italy’s most renowned wine, made from the nebbiolo grapes produced in the vineyard-covered hillsides surrounding the town. A visit to the historic center is included in many Piedmont wine tours, with time to explore the center and taste the prestigious wines produced in the Le Langhe-Roero countryside.

Wine tasting day trips generally include lunch featuring this food-centric region’s famous cuisine. For an unforgettable view of this protected landscape, opt for a hot-air balloon ride over Piedmont.

Things to know before you go

  • La Morra is set in the heart of Barolo wine country, a must-see for wine lovers.
  • You’ll want to photograph the rolling landscapes of Le Langhe, so be sure to bring your camera.
  • The town center is accessible to wheelchair users, but wineries may not be. If you are visiting as part of a wine tour, check in advance.
  • Choose comfortable shoes and dress for the weather when touring La Morra and the wine country, as you will spend most of your time outdoors.

How to get there

La Morra is about a 20-minute drive southwest from Alba. The best way to visit the town is with a small-group or private tour with transport to avoid navigating the country roads alone or facing multiple bus connections.

When to get there

Try to visit Le Langhe and its hill towns in spring and fall, when the hillsides are green with lush vineyards. For a deep dive into the wine-making tradition, time your tour for late summer to see the vendemmia (traditional grape harvest).

The Protected Landscapes of Le Langhe-Roero and Monferrato

Piedmont’s vineyard landscape, known as Le Langhe-Roero and Monferrato, were named together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. The region is recognized for its uniquely beautiful landscapes, which comprise five wine growing districts and the historic hill towns of Serralunga, Nieve, La Morra, Barolo, and Bra. The history of winemaking here probably began during the time of the Etruscans, five centuries before the birth of Christ, and this corner of Piedmont continues to produce some of Italy’s most famous wines.
