Lac Village
Mai Châu District, Vietnam
More than 700 years old, Lac Village is home to Thai ethnic minorities living in Vietnam, who open up their homes to tourists wanting to experience village life. The residents mainly make their income from traditional weaving, agriculture, and tourism. The village is surrounded by green rice fields with mountains in the distance, creating a serene landscape.
The basics
Tours to Lac Village generally start in Hanoi and either head out on day trips or have the option of an overnight stay at a homestay (usually built on stilts) or a resort. You can slow down here, learning traditional weaving methods, walking or biking between villages in the area through rice fields, or watching folk dances and singing. Try staple food like bamboo shoots and sticky rice, and try ruou can rice wine, too.
Things to know before you go
Make sure to bring bug spray and sun protection.
Dress with respect since you are in a village. If you visit when it's hot, wear loose, flowy clothing that covers the shoulders and knees.
If you head into the rice fields, be prepared to get muddy, and consider a more substantial pair of shoes (instead of flip-flops, which can get stuck in the mud).
How to get there
There are a few ways to get out to Mai Chau’s Lac Village from Hanoi. The easiest is to book a tour that includes transportation and organizes the logistics. It’s about a 3-hour ride in a car from Hanoi. You can also hire a private taxi, book a shared mini-van, or take the public bus if you’re feeling adventurous. Remember that the bus takes around four to five hours since the roads are bumpy and windy, but it is the cheapest.
When to get there
Aim to visit Lac Village from fall (October–November) to spring (March–April). You'll experience more rain in the hot summer, which can be unpleasant. If you want to see the rice harvest, visit in September or October. No matter when you go, take a raincoat or poncho.
The best Vietnamese street food
Spend time sitting on short plastic stools eating all sorts of street food in bigger cities like Hanoi. That’s where most people eat, socialize, and have a few icy beers. Book a food tour for guidance on the best spots for pho (rice noodle soup) bun cha (grilled pork patties, herbs, noodles, fish sauce), and more.
