Lagoonarium

Récif du Motu de Bora, Bora Bora, Bora Bora

Bora Bora’s Lagoonarium is a natural aquarium located on a small motu (or islet) east of the main island. It’s well known as a great snorkeling destination.

The basics

As the name suggests, Bora Bora’s Lagoonarium is part natural lagoon, part aquarium. The sea life is contained within a lagoon by nets, providing a unique opportunity to see fish, rays, turtles, and small sharks living in their natural habitat. Visitors can snorkel around, checking out the different species in the company of an experienced wildlife guide.

You can expand your Bora Bora experience with a catamaran cruise through the beautiful lagoon, or join a 4WD excursion across the island to see ancient temples, World War II military outposts, and tropical fruit plantations.

Things to know before you go

  • You must pre-book a spot on a guided tour to visit the Lagoonarium.
  • Children (and adults) should be confident of their ability to swim unaided to best enjoy the experience.
  • It's best to bring your own water shoes with you.
  • There are shower and bathroom facilities on-site.
  • Visiting the Lagoonarium means taking a boat ride and swimming from pontoons, and may not be suitable for people with limited mobility.

How to get there

The Lagoonarium is located on a motu off the east coast of Bora Bora in French Polynesia. It’s only accessible as part of an organized tour, which includes round-trip hotel transfers.

When to get there

Bora Bora is a popular tourist destination, and restaurants, hotels, and other amenities are open all year round. The season from May to October usually sees the most settled and dry weather, which means snorkeling visibility is at its best.

A diving paradise

On Bora Bora, the turquoise water is the star of the show. It can be enjoyed on a boat tour or snorkeling trip, but for visitors with the necessary certification, scuba diving is a must. The island is surrounded by a barrier reef that’s home to many different types of coral and a wealth of sea life. The most popular dives include Tupai—where you might even spot humpback whales from August to November—and Tupitipiti, where advanced divers can explore caves and canyons.
