POINT OF INTEREST

Laguna de los Tres

Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, El Calafate, Santa Cruz

Only reachable via one of Patagonia’s most iconic treks, Laguna de los Tres is an ultra-marine lake with a backdrop of jagged mountains. The glacier lake sits in the shadow of Mt. Fitz Roy, a mountain that threatens one of the planet’s most-challenging ascents. The trek to the lake is 1 miles (25 kilometers long.

The basics

Laguna de los Tres is most commonly accessed via a 2-day trek that lets you soak up the scenery of Los Glaciares National Park at a more relaxed pace—full-day hikes are offered but require trekking experience and a good level of fitness. Most treks climb to an altitude of 2,624 feet (800 meters) and pass natural treasures such as the Cerro Torre Glacier, Mt. Fitz Roy; and the Capri, Madre, and Hija lakes.

Things to know before you go

  • Hiking boots, and warm and waterproof clothing are essential for the challenging hike to Laguna de los Tres. Hiking sticks are optional but provide excellent support for steep ascents.
  • Overnight tours typically include camping accommodation and all meals.
  • The closest town to Laguna de los Tres is El Chaltne, where you’ll find an abundance of accommodation options, outdoor stores, and restaurants.
  • There’s nowhere along the trail to buy food or water so ensure you stock up before setting off.

How to get there

Laguna de los Tres is only accessible on foot. The trailhead begins in the north of El Chalten—follow Avenida San Martin until you reach the parking lot on your left. Hiking tours typically begin the trek from Hosteria El Pilar, which is a 9-mile (14-kilometer) drive from El Chalten.

When to get there

Patagonia’s hiking season runs from October to April, when the weather is most pleasant and temperatures are moderate. As you’d expect, peak season brings the highest concentration of crowds, so try to begin your trek as early as possible if you’re keen to avoid large groups.
