POINT OF INTEREST

Lake Cave

Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, Forest Grove, Western Australia, 6286

See hanging crystals, dramatic stalactites, and a glittering underground lake at the aptly named Lake Cave. Part of Western Australia’s Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, the natural cave lies beneath an ancient karri forest and is among the most impressive of the Margaret River region.

The Basics

Admire Lake Cave from all angles, entering the underground cavern through a natural doline (or sinkhole), enjoying a guided tour of the cave and its lake, and gazing down over the cave from the treetop viewing platform outside. An on-site interpretive center offers further insight into the cave’s natural wonders, as well as the many other caves around Margaret River.

Day tours of the Margaret River region from Perth often include a visit to Lake Cave alongside regional attractions such as Busselton Jetty, Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, or wine tasting at the Margaret River wineries. Combination tickets are available for Lake Cave, Mammoth Cave, Jewel Cave, and Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Cave visits are by guided tour only and take one hour. Advance bookings are recommended.

  • The Lake Cave Cafe serves drinks, snacks, and a light lunch menu. There is also a gift shop.

  • Wear comfortable shoes and bring a sweater—it can get cool inside the cave.

  • The cave is not accessible for wheelchair users.

How to Get There

Lake Cave is located in Forest Grove, around 11 miles (18 kilometers) southwest of the town of Margaret River—about a 20-minute drive. There’s no public transportation to the cave, so you need to drive or join a guided tour.

When to Get There

The cave is open daily, year-round. The busiest time to visit is in summer (January and February), when an early-morning or late-afternoon visit is best for avoiding the crowds.

Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge

Lake Cave is one of a series of natural caves dotted along the Leeuwin-Naturaliste ridge, part of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. Other caves worth visiting include Mammoth Cave, famous for its ancient fossils of extinct animals including giant kangaroos; Giants Cave and Calgardup Cave, which are both popular destinations for caving and adventure tours; and the gigantic Jewel Cave.
