Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve

Carretera 987 Km 5.9 Las Croabas, Fajardo, Puerto Rico

On the northeasternmost tip of Puerto Rico, this nature reserve protects the island’s tropical landscape, including a bioluminescent lagoon, mangroves, pretty beaches, and a lighthouse. There's also a visitor center where you can learn about the reserve's history and natural features.

There are all sorts of ways to experience Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve, from taking one of the daily guided tours to signing up for a special evening tour or kayaking session. The reserve is managed by the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico’s Para la Naturaleza program, which runs all sorts of special workshops that allow visitors to learn more about the park and its resources in a hands-on way.

  • There is a fee to visit the reserve.

  • Wear comfortable shoes and plenty of sunscreen and bug spray while visiting the reserve.

Located on the northeastern tip of Puerto Rico, the reserve is near El Yunque National Forest, about a 90-minute drive from San Juan. The best way to get there is by car or taxi, and on-site parking is available. You can also request a stop at the reserve on a private tour of the island.

The reserve is open throughout the year, but opening days and hours vary. It remains closed on major public and Catholic holidays. The best time to visit the park is during the dry season, which runs from December through May. The earlier in the day you arrive the better, if you want to avoid the sun and heat. Guided tours are typically available in the morning and early afternoon.

A short drive from Las Cabezas, El Yunque National Park is the largest nature reserve on the island. It's fantastic for hiking, with a well-maintained trail system and plenty of things to see, beyond tropical foliage. Highlights include La Coca and La Mina Falls and the Mount Britton Lookout Tower viewpoint.
