Le Grand Marché
Cours Mirabeau, Aix-en-Provence, France, 13100
Ground zero for shopping in Aix-en-Provence, Le Grand Marche (which translates to "the big market") is a massive outdoor market where vendors sell everything from souvenirs to textiles. The three-day-a-week market is a great place to pick up local handicrafts and textiles, as well as vintage second-hand finds and fresh produce.
The basics
If you know a bit of French and want to spend a lot of time perusing the seemingly endless stalls at this popular market, you can visit on your own for a shopping adventure. Alternatively, come to the market on a walking tour of the city, some focusing on the region's culinary traditions. You can also visit the market on an Aix-en-Provence sightseeing tour from Marseille, some of which also visit nearby Cassis.
Things to know before you go
Always say “Bonjour!” to people when you approach their stalls, even if it’s the only French you can muster. It’s considered very rude not to greet people in France.
Bring cash, as some vendors might not accept digital payments/cards (or might charge you a fee for the privilege).
It’s OK to bargain gently, but you’ll have more luck if you are buying multiple items from the same vendor.
How to get there
The market spreads out over multiple streets that jet out like spokes from the Place du Général de Gaulle in the heart of the city. Textiles can be found on Cours Mirabeau, while flea market vendors are found on Place des Combattants d'Afrique du Nord and at the top of Avenue Victor Hugo. Craft vendors usually set up along rue Thiers et Place Forbin.
When to get there
Le Grand Marché is open year-round on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from morning until early afternoon. It stays open slightly later on Saturdays in July. Come first thing in the morning on a weekday to beat the crowds and potentially get access to the best selection of merchandise.
Must-buy souvenirs in Provence
If you want to buy souvenirs from Provence, you've come to the right place. While market vendors sell everything from fresh fruits to bric-a-brac, they also stock souvenir-worthy items. Keep your eyes out for French-milled soap, colorful ceramic dishes in bold colors, and lavender everything, from drawer sachets to lavender honey.
