Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse

Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse is often mistaken for “The Lighthouse at the End of the World,” made famous by novelist Jules Verne. Verne was actually inspired by the San Juan de Salvamento lighthouse, further east, but it’s a fitting description nonetheless: Les Eclaireurs is the last landmark many sailors see as they sail south to Antarctica.
The basics
Whether taking a day cruise along the Beagle Channel from Ushuaia or heading out on a multi-day cruise to Antarctica, you’ll likely pass Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse. Standing watch over the mouth of Ushuaia Bay, along the Beagle Channel, it’s the southernmost structure in Argentina and one of Patagonia’s most photographed landmarks. The diminutive red and white-striped tower is a striking sight, rising up from a rocky isle and often surrounded by sea birds and sea lions. Although it’s not possible to visit the lighthouse, most cruises pass close enough to take photos.

- A cruise along the Beagle Channel is a must-do for travelers visiting Patagonia, affording incredible photo opportunities and wildlife sightings.
- The climate in Patagonia can be harsh and the sea winds can be strong even in the summer—wrap up warm and bring a hat and gloves.

How to get there
The only way to see the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse is from the water and Beagle Channel cruises set sail from Ushuaia port. The closest airport is in Ushuaia, served by daily flights from Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile.
When to get there
Cruises set sail year-round but the mildest weather is typically during the summer (December to February.) Crowds flock to Ushuaia at this time of year so book cruises in advance to avoid disappointment. Spring and fall offer the best compromise, with fewer crowds and decent weather.

Stretching for 150 miles (240 kilometers) along the southern shore of Tierra del Fuego Island, a cruise along the Beagle Channel is one of Patagonia’s most spectacular journeys.
