Lincoln’s Rock
The large, white expanse of Lincoln’s Rock is a great place from which to admire the views across the Blue Mountains National Park’s Jamison Valley. Although the park might be better known for its vertical sandstone turrets (such as the Three Sisters), the flat Lincoln’s Rock is another favorite spot with photographers, near Wentworth Falls.
The basics
Travelers in the Blue Mountains are never far from a beautiful view, and Lincoln’s Rock is one of the best places for these. The color of the white rock changes throughout the day, so some people like to visit at different times to experience the different light. Many guided tours from Sydney include a stop here, along with other attractions such as the Echo Point Lookout (Three Sisters), Govetts Leap Lookout, and Scenic World.
Things to know before you go
- Keep a close watch on kids, as the edge of the rock is unfenced.
- The path to the rock is gravel, so travelers with wheelchairs might need assistance.
- No restrooms are available here, so use the amenities in Wentworth Falls village.
How to get there
Lincoln’s Rock is just south of Wentworth Falls village. If you’re driving, follow Tableland Road until you meet the intersection of Hordern Road. A parking lot is at the end of this road. From there, the rock is only about 1,000 feet (300 meters) along a flat path. Wentworth Falls is about 60 miles (95 kilometers) west of central Sydney, which takes about 80 minutes to drive, or 2 hours on the train.
When to get there
Fall–spring (March–November) is the best time of year to visit the Blue Mountains, as the summers can be extremely hot. There’s also an increased risk of bushfires between December and February. Whenever you come, bring plenty of drinking water and sun protection as the rock is in an exposed location. It’s especially popular at sunset, so arrive early to get a parking spot.
Check out Wentworth Falls
Just up the road from Lincoln’s Rock and an ideal place to visit at the same time is Wentworth Falls (the waterfalls rather than the town of the same name). A short, steep walk from a picnic area leads to Fletchers Lookout, which has great views of the 328-foot (100-meter) high waterfall plunging into the valley. You can continue to the very top of the falls. Save your energy (and water) for the uphill return, up 200 steps.
