Lingaraja Temple

Lingaraj Temple Rd, Bhubaneswar, India, 751002

The Lingaraja Temple in Bhubaneshwar, dating to the 11th century, is celebrated as a fine example of Kalinga temple architecture. It stands around 180 feet (55 meters) and houses a Shivling (representation of the Lord Shiva) within its walls.

The basics

Like many Hindu temples in Odisha, the Lingaraja Temple is off-limits to non-Hindus. However, a dedicated platform exists for those who want to see the temple and take photos of it from the outside. Non-Hindus are not allowed inside the temple complex. There is a viewing platform if you want to see it, but you aren’t a Hindu practitioner.

Things to know before you go

  • The temple is a must-see for Hindu travelers visiting Bhubaneshwar.

  • Cameras and other electronic items like mobile phones aren't allowed at the temple.

  • Even if you’re only visiting the viewing platform, it’s still polite to dress modestly, with clothes covering your knees and shoulders, out of respect for local customs.

How to get there

The Lingaraja Temple is located in Bhubaneshwar, about a 10–15-minute drive from the Bhubaneshwar Railway Station or 10 minutes by road from the Bhubaneshwar Airport. The easiest way to get to the temple is by hiring an auto-rickshaw or taxi or by joining a tour that includes transportation around town.

When to get there

The Lingaraja Temple is open daily from morning until evening. You'll find the fewest crowds if you visit first thing in the morning, while the temple will likely be at its liveliest in the evening, after working hours. Expect major crowds and a festive environment if you come during the annual Shivratri celebrations, which usually take place in February.

Visiting the Bramheswara Temple

Less than a 10-minute drive from the Lingaraja Temple, the Brahmeswara Temple is yet another excellent example of Hindu temple architecture, with intricately carved exteriors and interiors. Like the Lingaraja Temple, the Bramheswara Temple is believed to date to the 11th century, though some believe it to be a few centuries older. The two temples are often visited in tandem and are notable for their spiritual significance and their architecture.
