Lithuanian Sea Museum
Smiltynės Gatvė 3, Klaipeda, Lithuania, 93100
A maritime museum, aquarium, and dolphinarium all rolled into one, the Lithuanian Sea Museum (Lietuvos Jūrų Muziejus) is a tribute to the underwater world of the Baltics. More than 88,000 artifacts and exhibits are on display, as well as a huge variety of marine animals, including Black Sea bottlenose dolphins.
The Basics
Visitors to the Lithuanian Sea Museum can enjoy full access to the aquarium and exhibitions. Highlights include the Fishermen’s Farmstead, a seabird exhibit, the ruins of the 19th-century Nerija fort, and a traditional kurėnas (sailing boat). At the open-air Sun Bay, it’s possible to spot sea lions during the summer months, while the dolphinarium hosts regular performances where visitors can watch the trainers interacting with the dolphins.
Things to Know Before You Go
Museum admission tickets include access to the aquarium and exhibitions; children under 5 get in free. Tickets for the dolphin shows are additional, and children under 3 are free.
There is a café and gift shop on-site.
Plan at least a couple of hours to visit the museum, or up to half a day if you want to attend a performance, too.
How to Get There
The museum is located in Klaipėda at the northernmost point of the Curonian Spit. Car and passenger ferries run across to the spit from Klaipėda town, setting out from the New Ferry Terminal. On arrival, it’s about a 10-minute bus or taxi ride to the museum. Paid parking is also available on-site.
When to Get There
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from June to August, with varying opening days throughout the rest of the year. The aquarium and exhibitions are open from midmorning to evening, but it’s worth timing your visit for one of the dolphin or seal performances. Sun Bay is only open during the summer months.
Marine Life Sightings
Among the many marine species on display at the aquarium are a number of Baltic fish such as lumpsuckers, as well as freshwater fish, sturgeons, and rays. Also resident at the aquarium are Black Sea bottlenose dolphins, Baltic Sea grey seals, East Atlantic common seals, Steller sea lions, and penguins.
