POINT OF INTEREST

Lomnicky Peak (Lomnicky Stit)

Lomnický štít,, Vysoké Tatry, Slovakia, 059 60

With its fantastic views and fresh, crisp mountain air, Lobicky Peak has been a popular destination for generations. A cable car ferries passengers up to the peak during summer, though some intrepid travelers prefer to climb on foot.

The basics

Lomnicky is among the tallest and best-known peaks in Slovakia. It has its own botanical garden and a metreological station that is the highest workplace in Slovakia (and home of the tallest phone booth). However, the gorgeous, panoramic views draw travelers in, and on clear days, you can see parts of Poland and roughly a fifth of Slovakia's landmass.

Things to know before you go

  • Climbing the mountain independently is prohibited, so hire a guide before you attempt your ascent.

  • Pack sun protection, even on overcast days, as it’s easy to get a sunburn at this high elevation.

  • You can purchase cable car tickets up to a week before your visit.

  • Lomnicky Peak (Lomnicky Stit) is not suitable for wheelchair users.

How to get there

Lomnicky Peak (Lomnicky Stit) is located in northern Slovakia, and it's about a 4.5-mile drive from Bratislava to the base of the mountain at Tatranska Lomnica. To get to the top, you'll need to take a cable car up to Skalnate Pleso and switch to another cable car to get you up to the peak.

When to get there

When you visit the mountain will depend entirely on what you want to do there. Hikers naturally prefer the summer months, when the conditions are ideal for hiking and mountain climbing, while winters are best for skiing and snow activities. Just be aware that the cable car is closed from November until the beginning of June.

Téry Hut

Situated around 2,015 meters (6,620 feet) above sea level, Téry Hut is the highest mountain hut in the area. The hut features three rooms with a total of 24 beds among them, and packages with and without meals are available. It’s an excellent place for hikers looking to sleep after a long trek, but you can also get there via funicular if you don't want to walk.
