Los Ladrillos
Boquete, Panama
Basalt rock formations swoop and curve at Los Ladrillos, a dramatic cliff in Boquete that hints at the region’s simmering volcanic past. While the spot is justifiably popular with photographers and nature lovers, it’s not just for sightseeing: Los Ladrillos is a popular rock-climbing area with routes that range from beginner-friendly to challenging. Local climbing instructors are readily available for those keen to ascend the rocks.
The basics
With its beautiful rock, mountain views, and scenic overlook, it’s no wonder that Los Ladrillos is included on many guided tours of Boquete—options range from guided cycling trips to excursions by private car. The view alone is worth the trip, especially at sunset. Even if you don’t have rock climbing experience, you can try out climbing here as well, since local guides generally provide all the necessary equipment.
Things to know before you go
- Watch for the giant Los Ladrillos sign located near the rocks—a classic spot for souvenir photos.
- Older kids are welcomed on guided climbs.
- Los Ladrillos gets busy at sunset when locals and tourists alike come for views across the surrounding mountains.
How to get there
Los Ladrillos is located on Route 41, or Via Boquete, the loop drive that departs from the town’s Avenida Central. If you’re coming from town, take the right-hand branch of Via Boquete where the road splits in two—you’ll see the cliffs on the left-hand side of the road shortly.
When to get there
Outdoor activities in Boquete are at their best during the dry season—typically from mid-December to mid-April—when conditions are generally clear and bright. It’s a great time to climb, too. Boquete itself also has several festivals worth planning for: January’s Boquete Coffee & Flower Festival and the crowd-pleasing Boquete Jazz and Blues Festival in February.
What to do in Boquete for nature lovers
Boasting a volcanic landscape and abundant trails, Boquete has a well-earned reputation as one of Panama’s top nature spots. Lush plants and abundant wildlife are highlights of hikes along the Lost Waterfalls Trail or Pipeline Trail, and there’s world-class bird-watching in Volcan Baru National Park. To see native species as they’re rehabilitated for release into the wild, visit Jungla de Panama Wildlife Refuge.
