Main Market Trier (Hauptmarkt Trier)
Hauptmarkt, Trier, Moselle Valley, 54290
Main Market (Hauptmarkt) is the vibrant heart of Trier's historic center, showcasing important landmarks such as the Fountain of St. Peter, the Steipe building, and a replica of the city's medieval stone cross (the original is in the City Museum). This lively square is surrounded by cafes, eateries, and shops, and hosts many festivals and events, and the Christmas market.
The basics
Its central location means it's almost impossible to miss the Main Market if you’re exploring Trier on foot. All of its main shopping streets conveniently meet at this central square, and many travelers visit it during self-guided walks to check off the city’s historic highlights. Another fun way to explore Trier and see the Main Market is during a self-guided smartphone game where you can answer questions to progress between top city sights.
Things to know before you go
The Main Market has wide and flat ground that’s accessible to wheelchair users, although it’s worth checking the accessibility of older buildings before you visit.
It’s hard to get lost as all of Trier’s main roads lead to the Hauptmarkt.
There are plenty of cafés and restaurants nearby, including a GALERIA shopping mall that’s perfect for rainy days.
How to get there
Trier’s Main Market is easy to get to by bus, as there are plenty of bus stops nearby. Take buses 1, 3, 5, or 8 to Nikolaus-Koch-Platz, which is under a 5-minute walk away. If traveling by car, there are parking facilities nearby; the Parkhaus Hauptmarkt Trier is around a 5-minute walk away.
When to get there
The Main Market is at its liveliest during market hours. Markets typically run from Mondays through Saturdays, except during city festivals and public holidays. The market varies depending on the day of the week, but farmers’ markets are a highlight (usually Tuesdays and Fridays) and typically sell baked goods, locally-grown produce, and delicatessen foods. Between the end of March and November, there are also wine stalls with local samples.
What to see near Main Market
History buffs have plenty to see near Trier’s Main Market. Don’t miss Porta Nigra—one of the four remaining Roman city gates. There’s also the Fountain of St. Peter, which dates back to 1595, and the Lowen-Pharmacy—one of Germany’s oldest pharmacies. After exploring the historical architecture, there are plenty of great cafés, shops, and restaurants too—including Walderdorffs, which serves traditional German bites with views of the cathedral.
