Maipo Valley

Maipo Valley, Santiago, Metropolitan

Chile’s Maipo Valley is often called the Bordeaux of South America for its numerous wine producers. Maipo’s many estates are among the nation’s top vineyards and its easy access from Santiago, and spectacular scenery makes it an ideal place for travelers looking to sample the nation’s favorite reds and whites.

The basics

Wines with acidic sweetness and true balance can be found in Alto Maipo—near the eastern edge of the Andes—which separate the valley from Argentina. The area, which is home to Pirque and Puento Alto, is among Maipo Valley’s top destinations for fruit-forward vintages. Crisp whites and bold Cabernet Sauvignons come from Maipo Bajo, near the town of Talagante, and you’ll also find Merlot, Chardonnay, and Carmenere varieties.

You can go it alone but if you’d like to have an expert to accompany you around the circuit of wineries, book a guided tour from Santiago. Your guide can give you a comprehensive overview of Chilean wines as a whole and tell you about the peculiarities that make the Maipo Valley wines so excellent. Tours typically take guests behind-the-scenes to see cellars and production systems, and usually include tastings.

Things to know before you go

  • Oenophiles visiting Chile shouldn’t miss the Maipo Valley.
  • Plan winery visits in advance; many wineries require advance reservations.
  • The legal drinking age in Chile is 18.
  • Many wineries are wheelchair-accessible; check ahead of visiting.
  • Many wineries offer tours in both Spanish and English.

How to get there

Several wineries in the Maipo Valley are reachable by public transportation—such as Santa Rita—which you can reach by taking bus number 5010 toward Buin from Los Héroes metro station. Otherwise, taking a tour from Santiago is recommended, so that you can enjoy sampling wines without the worry of driving.

When to get there

Most wineries open throughout the year but the best time to visit is during the harvest season, from the end of March until May. The days are cooler, the leaves are changing colors, and many wineries offer special harvest tours.

Horseback Riding Tours

A unique way to explore the valley’s wineries is by taking a horseback tour. This has the added benefit of letting you slow down and soak up the scenery rather than rushing from one venue to the next by vehicle. Tours usually begin at a local ranch and typically include hearty meals to keep you energized.
