Maison Champy
5 Rue du Grenier À Sel, Beaune, France, 21200
Drawing from three centuries of winemaking history, Maison Champy is not only one of the most prestigious of Burgundy’s Grand Cru wineries, it’s also the region’s oldest wine house. Established in 1720, the estate is known for its Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune wines, as well as its historic building, inspired by Gustave Eiffel.
The basics
Guided visits to the Maison Champy wine house include a tour of the 15th-century cellars and a tasting of five different wines, including three Grand Crus. You can also opt for a tour of the vineyards around Burgundy by e-bike or e-scooter; dine at the winery’s Cuve 17 restaurant; or taste wines at the shop, with a view of the Hospices de Beaune. Since Maison Champy is in the Old Town of Beaune, it’s easy to combine a tasting with a walking tour of the city.
Things to know before you go
Maison Champy produces red and white wines, most notably pinot noir and chardonnay.
Architecture enthusiasts will appreciate the wine house itself, an 18th-century building that is listed as a Historical Monument.
Guided tours and tastings are available in French and English. Reservations are recommended.
Some parts of the tours may not be wheelchair accessible, so it’s best to get in touch in advance.
How to get there
Maison Champy has two locations in the Old Town of Beaune, along with several vineyards dotted throughout the Burgundy region. The main wine house and cellars are located at 5 Rue du Grenier À Sel, while the Maison Champy wine shop is located on Place des Halles, right by the Hospices de Beaune. It takes less than 10 minutes to walk between the two.
When to get there
Tours and tastings are held at Maison Champy year-round, although opening hours and tour schedules vary throughout the seasons. The most popular time to visit Beaune is between late spring and the fall harvest season. Beaune’s renowned Wine Auction is held in November and draws huge crowds, so book well ahead if you’re visiting at that time.
Strolling the landmarks of Beaune’s Old Town
A lovely way to see Beaune’s compact Old Town is on a walking tour, starting with the 15th-century Hospices de Beaune (Hôtel-Dieu), known for its colorful Gothic-style architecture and flamboyantly tiled roof. Nearby, visit the Wine Museum (Musée du Vin), located in the half-timbered Hôtel des Ducs de Bourgogne, as well as the Fallot Mustard Museum and the Maison des Climats, a museum devoted to Burgundy’s UNESCO–listed wine terroirs.
