Maison Folie Hospice d'Havré
100 Rue de Tournai, Tourcoing, Hauts-de-France, 59200
Founded as a monastery in the 13th century, the Maison Folie Hospice d’Havré—located in Tourcoing, just outside Lille—is a unique architectural landmark, and the oldest still-complete convent in the region. But that’s not the only reason it’s notable. Recently transformed into a venue for art exhibitions, performances, and other events, it’s now a cultural highlight too.
The basics
Maisons Folies—vibrant places of culture and exchange—have blossomed all over Lille over the last 20 years, but few are as notable as the Maison Folie Hospice d’Havré. That’s thanks in part to the venue’s unique complex of historic buildings, as well as its busy events calendar. From theatrical performances to art workshops, traveling concerts to exhibitions, it’s Tourcoing’s one-stop cultural shop—and easy to explore independently.
Things to know before you go
The Maison Folie Hospice d’Havré is accessible to wheelchair users.
Entry to the Maison Folie is free, although you can also buy entry to its ticketed events online.
Don’t miss the chance to explore its ornate cloister and chapel—which are listed historic monuments—and stroll its landscaped gardens.
A gourmet restaurant and bistro, Le Paradoxe, is located at the Hospice d’Havré if you wish to book a meal to accompany your sightseeing.
How to get there
The Maison Folie Hospice d’Havré is at 100 Rue de Tournai in Tourcoing. If you’re coming from Lille, take the TER train from Lille-Flandres to Tourcoing. Alternatively, take the Tramway or Metro line 2 from Lille Europe to Tourcoing Centre. The journey is roughly half an hour, and the Maison Folie is less than 10 minutes on foot from the station.
When to get there
The Maison Folie Hospice d’Havré is open every day except Tuesday, from early afternoon to early evening. It’s closed on public holidays throughout the year. Note that hours for concerts, workshops, and other events at the Maison Folie can vary; consult your tickets to confirm timings.
Where to find more Maison Folies
Another of the Lille area’s notable Maisons Folies, or wide-ranging cultural centers, the Maison Folie de Wazemmes is housed in a former textile mill that’s been renovated with ultra-modern architectural touches. With its mix of artist workshops; and exhibitions; as well as a mix of dance, theater, and musical performances, it’s another worthy cultural stop.
