Malakoff Tower (Torre Malakoff)
Praça do Arsenal, Recife, Pernambuco, 50030-350
With its simple cream and white façade and unassuming central dome, the Malakoff Tower (Torre Malakoff) isn’t Recife’s most striking landmark, but it’s nonetheless an important historical monument. Built in the 19th century as an astronomic observatory and arsenal storage for the military, it’s now been converted into an exhibition space and public observatory.
The basics
Many sightseeing tours of Recife and walking tours of the historic center stop at the landmark Malakoff Tower. Various temporary art, photography, and cultural exhibitions are hosted in the tower, spread throughout eight different rooms. Once you’ve finished browsing the displays, head up to the rooftop observatory where you can enjoy a view across the city, including the canal ways and seafront, as well as peeking through the telescopes.
Things to know before you go
Exhibitions are only hosted for temporary periods throughout the year, so don’t be disappointed if you miss out—you can still head up to the rooftop observatory!
Admission to the tower is free.
Exhibitions are typically in Portuguese only.
How to get there
The Malakoff Tower is located along Praça do Arsenal in the historic center on the main island of Recife. It’s easy to get there on foot if you’re visiting the central attractions, and it’s just a 5-minute walk from the cruise port.
When to get there
Opening hours at the Malakoff Tower can be somewhat unreliable, so it’s best to check ahead if you want to visit the observatory or check out the exhibition space. The tower is typically open Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 6pm, and Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 3pm to 6pm.
Things to do in Recife’s old city
Recife’s historic center is the most atmospheric part of the city and is packed with cultural highlights. After taking in the views from the Malakoff Tower, pay a visit to the nearby Cais do Sertão Cultural Center and the Frevo Museum to learn more about northeastern Brazilian music and culture, pick up some traditional handicrafts from the Pernambuco Artisan Center, and admire the colorful buildings and Recife statue—the city’s most Instagram-friendly artwork—at Marco Zero Square.
