Mandalay Hill

Mandalay, Myanmar

Peppered with golden pagodas, Mandalay Hill looms over what’s otherwise a very flat city. This 790-foot (240-meter) hill is significant for the locals of Mandalay; according to legend, the Buddha visited and prophesied that a thriving city would be built below. It’s the perfect place to watch the sunset and admire the city's glimmering stupas.

The basics

You’ll climb 1,729 steps to reach the top of Mandalay Hill; it’s steep and best suited for those with moderate physical fitness, but the views from the top are worth it. Highlights along the way include the Sataungpyei Pagoda, flanked by statues of ogres, and the Shweyattaw Buddha statue, with outstretched arms. Mandalay sightseeing tours often include Mandalay Hill as well as the Jade Market and the peaceful Shwe In Bin Monastery.

Things to know before you go

  • There’s no wheelchair-accessible route up Mandalay Hill.

  • Young Burmese monks head to the hill at sunset to practice their English skills with visitors. It’s a lovely way to get to know the locals.

  • As you climb the hill, you’ll need to remove your shoes when you pass through temples and stupas.

  • Dress respectfully by covering your shoulders and knees, wear sensible walking shoes, and take plenty of water.

How to get there

Mandalay Hill is a little far from the center of Mandalay and isn’t serviced by public transport. However, taxis in Myanmar are extremely cheap and readily available; it’s a 25-minute drive via Route 1. If you’re heading there for sunset in rush hour, it’s a good idea to budget some more time for the journey due to traffic.

When to get there

While Mandalay Hill is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the best times to visit are sunset or sunrise. Opt for sunrise to climb the steps in the coolest temperature and beat the crowds. Sunset is the busiest time, but it offers a great opportunity to mingle with locals and Burmese monks.

The best things to do in Mandalay

Mandalay offers a glimpse into the real Myanmar in all of its gritty and glimmering glory. Highlights of any visit to Mandalay include the Mahamuni Buddha Temple, a grand and golden pagoda built to house a huge Buddha statue; the 19th-century Mandalay Royal Palace with its throne room; and Mahamuni Paya, a gleaming bronze and gold seated Buddha statue.
