Maquinit Hot Springs
Coron, Palawan
A series of geothermally heated pools framed by mangroves and the ocean, Maquinit Hot Springs is a popular trip from Coron Town. The warm salt water, similar to hot tubs, is particularly appealing in the evening when the air is cooler, providing more contrast with the water. On hot, sunny days, the heat can feel too much.
The basics
There’s a small fee to visit Maquinit Hot Springs, which is payable in cash on arrival. Simple facilities include bathrooms, chairs, tables, and palm huts, but there’s no restaurant, although you’re welcome to bring your own food. As well as lounging or floating in the warm water and soaking tired muscles, there’s a short boardwalk through the mangroves, where herons often nest. Some Coron Town tours include a visit to the hot springs.
Things to know before you go
- Maquinit Hot Springs is a good option for travelers who have been to Coron for a long time and want to get away from boats.
- Avoid using drones, as herons sometimes nest in the surrounding mangroves and may attack.
- Maquinit Hot Springs is not adapted for travelers who rely on wheelchairs.
How to get there
Maquinit Hot Springs lies south of Busuanga Island, about a 3-mile (5-kilometer) drive from Coron Town. There is no public transport, taxis, or rideshares, so you can take a tricycle, join a tour, or book a private driver. The road is in poor condition, so only experienced, insured, and licensed riders should attempt it on a scooter.
When to get there
Maquinit Hot Springs is open from 8am to 8pm daily, with the last admission at 7 p.m. It’s best to arrive around sunset when the light is lovely, and stay into the evening. Visiting during the rainy season (roughly June through October) can be fun, particularly for travelers from colder climates, as the gray sky and cool rain contrast with the balmy water.
Getting into hot water around Coron
Coron doesn’t have a visible volcano, but plenty of volcanic activity is bubbling away under the surface. Scuba divers and free divers can experience it in the weird and wonderful Barracuda Lake, which features three layers of water at different temperatures: cool fresh water, warm brackish water, and salt water.
