Located on the north coast of Trinidad, Maracas Bay is an idyllic white sand beach, complete with rolling turquoise waves and swaying palm trees. After a scenic mountain drive through the rain forest, you’ll arrive at these sandy shores, which are protected by a deep bay, perfect for an afternoon lazing on the beach.
The basics
Perhaps one of the best-known beaches on the island of Trinidad, due to its beautiful natural setting and proximity to Port of Spain, Maracas Bay provides ample space to enjoy the sand and surf. The beach is also known for its food scene, particularly for its “bake and shark”—a local dish of battered shark on fried flatbread—which you can get at Richard’s (a fan favorite) or other huts along the coast.
Things to know before you go
- You can often rent chairs and umbrellas on the beach.
- The surf can sometimes be dangerous and unsafe for water play, so stay away from parts of the beach marked with red flags.
- Well-maintained bathrooms and showers are available for use for a small fee.
- A lifeguard is on duty.
How to get there
Maracas Bay is roughly 45 minutes by car from Port of Spain along North Coast Road. You can get there on your own, on a tour, or with a hired driver.
When to get there
There’s never a bad time to visit the beach, but a trip during the dry season (January through May) makes for optimal sunbathing weather. Waves are known to be stronger in the winter; just pay attention to the lifeguard and posted surf warnings.
