Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve
148 Mountain View Road, Maleny, Queensland, 4552
A pocket of subtropical rainforest overlooking the misty peaks of the Glass House Mountains, Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve proves that there’s more to Queensland’s Sunshine Coast than suntans, surfboards, and shoreline. A living museum of native flora and fauna, the reserve is ideal for walking, picnicking, and wildlife-watching.
The basics
With 135 acres (55 hectares) to explore, a visit to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is all about getting back to nature. Follow the five walking trails and boardwalks, looking out for plants, birds, fungi, and other wildlife along the way—the reserve is home to some 391 plant species, 141 bird species, and 68 different animal species. Don’t miss out on a visit to the Rainforest Discovery Centre, where you can enjoy views of the Glass House Mountains, walk an elevated boardwalk through the rainforest, and learn more about the reserve’s biodiversity.
Things to know before you go
Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is a popular choice for families, and the exhibitions and walking trails are suitable for kids of all ages.
Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes, as the rainforest trails can be uneven and slippy after rainfall.
Facilities at the reserve include a café, restrooms, barbecue and picnic areas, and a children’s playground.
There is no admission fee to visit the reserve, and entrance to the Discovery Centre is by coin donation. Guided tours are also available, but it’s best to book ahead.
Two trails, the Glider Gallery boardwalk and the Butterfly Walk, are accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
How to get there
Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is located along the Blackall Range, about a 10-minute drive from Maleny in the Sunshine Coast hinterlands. There’s no public transport to the reserve, so you will need your own vehicle or to visit as part of a tour. Free parking is available onsite.
When to get there
The reserve, Discovery Centre, and car park are all open daily from 7am through 6pm, except on bank holidays. The trails can get busy on summer (December–February) weekends, so start early to avoid the crowds, snag a parking spot, and avoid walking in the midday heat.
Exploring the Sunshine Coast hinterlands
The mountainous landscapes and lively market towns of the Sunshine Coast hinterlands afford plenty of options for day-trippers from Brisbane or the beach resorts. Combine a visit to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve with shopping at the famous Eumundi Markets (Wednesdays and Saturdays only), a visit to the mountaintop towns of Montville and Maleny, a tour of the Ginger Factory, and a stop at McCarthy’s Lookout, which affords views across the Glass House Mountains.
